(1) The surface of scrap steel shall be clean with less rust. Because sundries such as sand on scrap steel will reduce the conductivity of the furnace, prolong the melting time, affect the dephosphorization effect of the oxidizer and erode the furnace. If the scrap steel is seriously rusted or stained with oil, it will reduce the yield of steel and alloy elements and increase the hydrogen content of steel.


(2) Scrap steel shall not contain lead, tin, arsenic, zinc, copper and other non-ferrous metals. Lead has high density and low melting point. It is insoluble in liquid steel and is easy to deposit in the gap at the bottom of the furnace, resulting in water leakage accidents. Tin, arsenic and copper are easy to cause brittleness of steel.


(3) Scrap steel cannot be mixed with closed containers, flammable and explosive substances and toxic substances to ensure safe production.


(4) The chemical composition of scrap should be clear, and the content of yellow phosphorus should not be too high.


(5) The scrap shape should not be too large. Pig iron is generally used to increase the ration of charge in electric furnace steelmaking, and the charging capacity usually does not exceed 30% of the charge.
